Whisker Watch: Protecting Your Cat in Case of Fire

A phone left charging in a Toa Payoh flat sparked a fire on July 14, causing quite a scare for a family of three. While most of the family made it out safely, we were saddened to hear that the pet cat didn’t survive. It led us to wonder, how can cat parents stay vigilant, and even more importantly; prepared, if the same scenario happened to them?

While the cause is still under review, early reports point to the fire starting in the bedroom where the phone was charging. It’s a heavy reminder that even everyday things can turn dangerous fast.

So what can cat parents learn from this?

1. Keep charging devices away from cat zones

Curious cats love to bat at wires or nap near warm devices. Make sure chargers are kept off the floor and away from where your cat likes to sleep or play. No one wants singed whiskers or worse.

2. Unplug when not in use

If you're stepping out, unplug those gadgets. Even the most harmless-looking cord can spark trouble. It’s a small habit that can make a big difference.

3. Have a kitty escape plan

Emergencies can get chaotic, so it's helpful to keep your cat carrier somewhere easy to grab. Practice calmly calling or luring your cat near exits too. It sounds silly now, but it can really help during stressful moments.

We're sending love to the family and a quiet purr in memory of their furry friend. Stay safe out there, hoomans and cats alike.
